Begin playing ice hockey with the Szczecin Northstars with only a helmet and skates
First Time Hockey Players
Players who want to try hockey do not need to purchase hockey equipment prior to stepping on the ice. The Szczecin Northstars only require players to wear skates (skate rentals are available at all ice rink locations in Szczecin) and a helmet on the ice. We have some spare equipment for new players to wear and a selection of hockey sticks for new players to borrow. Our hockey equipment (including hockey sticks) is available for new players to borrow for a period of two weeks.
First Purchases
After your child’s first two weeks of training, you are required to purchase several pieces of hockey equipment for your child to wear. It is best that these items are specifically suited for the player. At minimum, players must wear a helmet with a full face cage, shin guards, and hockey gloves. Players must also have their own hockey stick.
It’s important that new players wear hockey equipment to help them feel confident on the ice when developing new skills. Hockey equipment helps protect a player from injuries to due to falling on the ice, or from being hit with a stick or puck. Properly fitted hockey equipment helps your child develop as a hockey player. They feel more confident when playing and training .
Check out the only hockey store in Szczecin if you are looking for hockey equipment. Consider purchasing used items for children as they grow quickly and the new equipment is stiffer than second hand equipment. There are many options for finding second hand equipment in Poland, including the Facebook Group “Kupię/Sprzedam Sprzęt do hokeja”.
Full Hockey Equipment
After a month, when you feel like your child is committed to ice hockey training, we recommend that you purchase the remaining pieces of hockey equipment for your child to complete their kit. Full ice hockey equipment includes a jersey and socks. The Szczecin Northstars arrange orders for team jerseys and socks throughout the season.
If you buy all your child’s hockey equipment brand new, they should practice putting it on and wearing it around the house to make it feel more comfortable. New equipment has a tendency to be quite stiff, and will feel heavy and restrictive for young and new players. Consider purchasing second hand equipment for young players as they will find it more comfortable.
